Pretzel Logic

1974 ABC Records sealed LP of Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic, catalog ABCD-808, a single 33 1/3 RPM vinyl album produced by Gary Katz. This copy remains in its shrink wrap and is recorded as Mint/Near Mint for both the record and outer sleeve; because it is unopened, the exact pressing and matrix details cannot be verified, and it is not represented here as a first pressing.

The jacket carries the album’s stark black-and-white street photograph: a winter pretzel cart, bare trees, pale sky, and the title set in formal serif type at upper right. The front shrink includes a promotional quote sticker reading, in part, that Pretzel Logic is “mysterious, clever and absolutely delightful,” attributed to Donald Fagen of Steely Dan.

The back cover continues the wintry city-park imagery and shows the full track sequence, including “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Any Major Dude Will Tell You,” “Parker’s Band,” “Pretzel Logic,” and “Monkey in Your Soul.” Printed U.S.A. ABC Records copyright text appears along the lower back edge. Released in 1974, Pretzel Logic captures Steely Dan at the point where their studio polish, jazz-inflected songwriting, and dry narrative wit had become unmistakably their own.
